3 Tips for Sourcing Rare Trading Cards

by Terra Fuller

Trading cards have appealed to people of all ages for many years. Manufacturers usually put out trading cards in individual series, which makes them highly collectible for enthusiasts.

There are certain cards within each series that are rarer than others. Sourcing these rare trading cards can be challenging, but there are some tips and tricks that you can use to add rare cards to your own trading card collection.

1. Network with Other Collectors

It can be beneficial to establish a network or other collectors when you are trying to source rare cards. These collectors likely value the same rare cards, and some may even have duplicates of rare cards they are willing to sell.

It is common for a collector to reach out to his or her network of contacts first before listing a rare card on the open market. Without the right network, you may never even know that the rare card you need is available for purchase.

The more extensive and reputable your network is, the easier it will be to source rare trading cards on the secondary market.

2. Invest in Promotional Packs

Trading card manufacturers put out several promotional packs throughout the course of the year. These packs are usually produced in limited numbers, and they almost always contain cards that are exclusive to that specific pack.

Many promotional packs will also contain additional rare cards from the previous series. Buying promotional packs can be a great way to score some rare cards that are difficult to find elsewhere for a decent price.

3. Buy Booster Boxes

Purchasing booster boxes can also be a great way to source rare trading cards for your collection. A booster box is meant to augment the cards you can collect by purchasing smaller trading card packs.

Manufacturers will often guarantee at least one rare card in each booster box, with some booster boxes containing multiple rare cards.

You will most likely receive some duplicates if you purchase a few booster boxes, but these products make it a lot easier to find the rare cards you are looking for to complete your collection.

The key to collecting trading cards successfully is knowing how to source cards that are classified as rare.

Rare cards can be purchased through a network of collectors, in promotional card tins or in booster boxes marketed by the manufacturer. Explore each of these options the next time you are searching for a rare card.
