Buy An Aftermarket Skid Plate To Add To Your UTV

by Terra Fuller

If you've recently bought a utility vehicle and are looking to do what you can to keep it running without damage, there are several different accessories that you may wish to buy. A UTV accessories supplier carries a wide assortment of options that you can mount to your off-road vehicle to protect it. One option is a skid plate, which you'll commonly find in such materials as metal and heavy plastic. This accessory attaches to the underside of your UTV and is fairly easy to install yourself if you have some basic experience with working on vehicles. Here are some things to know about adding a skid plate to your UTV.

What It Does

A skid plate is a thin, durable product that is designed to protect the underside of your UTV from damage. When you're riding on uneven terrain, it's likely that hard objects such as rocks will scrape on the underside of the vehicle. While minor incidents of this type may not be overly serious, hard contact with a rock that juts upward can easily break any number of parts on the underside of the vehicle — likely leaving you with a hefty repair bill and, in some cases, maybe even leaving you stranded. Having a skid place in place will provide a solid barrier that protects your vehicle.

Choosing A Product

When you shop for an aftermarket UTV skid plate, you'll need to look for a product that is specifically designed for the make and model of your vehicle. There's a good chance that you'll see a handful of different products that are compatible. Assess each of these products to note how much coverage they provide. There are skid plates that cover part of the underside of the vehicle and others that cover the entire underside. While the latter will cost you more, it will also provide better protection against damage.

Existing Skid Plate

If you look at the underside of your UTV, it's possible that you might see some form of skid plate already in place. Its presence doesn't suggest that you should forget about the idea of buying an aftermarket accessory. Many stock skid plates protect only a small area beneath the UTV, leaving other areas at risk of contact from rocks and the damage that this contact causes. Even if your UTV has a small skid plate, it's a good investment to buy a full-sized product. You can easily remove the stock skid plate and install your aftermarket part.
